Civilian Camp

Civilians help tell the story of the home front, how families coped with separation, how communities supported troops, and how people navigated the political and social upheaval of the time.

Beyond enhancing the historical narrative, civilian portrayals also create a more immersive atmosphere for visitors. A reenactment with only military elements may resemble a drill field, but the addition of civilians transforms it into a living town or crossroads, complete with bustling activity, emotional stories, and personal interactions.

Perhaps most importantly, portraying civilians allows for inclusive participation. Not everyone wants to march in formation or wear heavy wool uniforms. Civilian roles welcome people of all ages, interests, and abilities into the reenacting community, encouraging families, educators, and new enthusiasts to get involved. Ultimately, civilians are essential to telling the full story of the Civil War, one not only fought on battlefields, but lived in homes, towns, and hearts across a divided nation.
