The Washington Civil War Association (WCWA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) living history organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the story of the American Civil War through reenactment, education, and community engagement.

Founded in 1993 , the WCWA is now one of the largest and most active Civil War reenacting organizations in the Pacific Northwest. We are a diverse community of historians, educators, families, and enthusiasts who share a passion for American history and a commitment to honoring the lives and sacrifices of those who lived during one of the most pivotal periods in our nation's past.

Our Mission

To educate the public, preserve history, and honor the people of the Civil War era by authentically portraying both military and civilian life from 1861 to 1865.

What We Do

Reenactments & Living History Events - We bring the past to life through immersive battle reenactments, period encampments, and living history demonstrations at public events across Washington and the greater Pacific Northwest.

Public Education - From school day programs to museum partnerships, we engage students and visitors with hands on learning, first person interpretation, and historical demonstrations that make the 1860s real and relatable.

Community & Heritage - We are a family friendly organization open to people of all backgrounds. Many of our members participate as families, connecting generations through shared history. Others join to honor an ancestor or deepen their understanding of the era.

Our Structure

The WCWA is made up of three main groups:

Union Battalion (Army of the Columbia) – Representing the Federal military forces, including infantry, artillery, cavalry, engineers, and musicians.

Confederate Battalion (Adams Legion) – Portraying Confederate forces with a focus on historical accuracy and respectful interpretation.

Civilian Corps – Representing life on the home front, including refugees, nurses, merchants, camp followers, and townspeople of all walks of life.

Each unit is responsible for its own training, impression development, and mentoring of new members—offering guidance on uniforms, equipment, and historical background.

What Sets Us Apart

Authenticity & Respect – Our members strive for historical accuracy in dress, speech, and behavior while treating the past with the respect it deserves.

Dynamic Engagement – No scripted battles. Our reenactments evolve based on tactics and decisions made in the field, adding realism and excitement to every event.

Inclusive Participation – Whether you’re a history buff, student, teacher, veteran, or curious newcomer—there’s a place for you in the WCWA.
